Before KISS embarked on the 1985-1986 Asylum tour, Bruce Kulick was in the early stages of his relationship with ESP Guitars. One of the first models gifted to him by ESP was an M1, featuring a striking sunburst finish that transitioned from white to blue. But what made this guitar truly special was its unique blue paint.
Finished in Japan, the paint had a “flip flop” effect—shifting colors depending on the angle. Shades of teal, aqua, purple, and even white appeared, making the guitar look different in every photograph. As Bruce once said, “It never looked the same twice!”
This iconic guitar was a staple of every Asylum tour performance, even featuring in Bruce’s main solo spot—where he’d famously take it off his shoulder and play it on the stage floor. Many legendary photos capture this moment.
Though Bruce now owns several replicas of it, the original Flip Flop guitar is on display in the exclusive Vault section of the Hard Rock Café in London, UK—a must-see for KISS and hard rock fans. It’s even featured on the cover of KISS’s upcoming "Off The Soundboard" release from their December 3, 1985, Asylum tour show.
