Hot off the heels of their official 'Convention Tour,' KISS filmed a brilliant acoustic performance for MTV’s Unplugged series before heading to Los Angeles to work on a brand-new album — their first since 1992’s Revenge.
This album, titled "Carnival of Souls", marked a departure for KISS, embracing grunge and alternative rock influences. The record's heavier sound featured drop-D tuned guitar riffs, largely crafted by guitarist Bruce Kulick, and its lyrical themes explored the struggles of everyday life.
By late 1995, as the album neared completion, Bruce noticed that Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons seemed increasingly distracted by KISS’s business affairs. Studio sessions were interrupted by long breaks for conference calls, and there was little focus on preparing for a tour or even organizing a photoshoot for the album cover. When he asked Paul about scheduling a photoshoot for Carnival of Souls, Paul’s response was simply, "Yeah." What Bruce didn’t know was that plans for a KISS reunion with the original members were already underway.
When the photoshoot finally took place, it was understated. The band gathered at Music Grinder Studios in Hollywood, where they had recorded the album, and took some simple group shots.
In a reflection of the evolving musical climate, Bruce sported a full beard for the first time—a first for any KISS member—while wielding his 1983 BC Rich Eagle Supreme and wearing a t-shirt featuring an alien drawing.
Carnival Of Souls was finally released in October 1997. It is fitting that the album’s closing track, "I Walk Alone," is the only KISS song to feature Bruce Kulick on lead vocals. He would heavily contribute to the album co-writing nine of its twelve songs.
